Lawyer Cecil Miller asks judge for time to consult NARC-K after ruling on parties’ cash

State funds have been released to the 13 political parties affiliated to the Party of National Unity. Ms Lucy Njuguna distributed the Sh48.7 million as ordered by Lady Justice Kalpana Rawal of November 19, last year. Lady Justice Rawal gave the order in a ruling on a case filed by Narc-Kenya against registrar Njuguna.

The party was dissatisfied with the decision by the registrar to allow PNU to distribute the Ksh48.7 million to political parties under it, Narc-Kenya, through lawyer Cecil Miller, had challenged the decision last year. Mr Miller told the judge that PNU had allocated itself 60 per cent of the funds released by the government. Lady justice Rawal ruled that a party with affiliates shall distribute the funds In accordance with the number of votes garnered by parliamentary and civic candidates. Yesterday, Ms Njuguna listed the distribution of the Sh48.7 million as follows: PNU gets 23.4 million, Narc-Kenya Sh2.9 million, Democratic Party Sh3.5 million, Kanu Sh6,9 million, Safina Sh4.3 million and Mr Kalembe Ndiles TIP, Shs 1.034 million.

Mr Miller told the judge that he needed time to consult with Narc-Kenya. PNU garnered 2,036,952 votes for the parliamentary seats and 1,626,893 for the civic seats. In total, the party got 3,663,845 votes representing 48.1 per cent, Narc-Renya garnered 158,619 votes for the parliamentary seats and 254,061 for civic seats, representing 6.4 per cent. “I was guided by these votes in distributing the money, Mr Njuguna told the court.
