DPP allowed to review Keino case

A magistrate court yesterday postponed athletics legend Kipchoge Keino’s plea taking in the case of embezzlement of funds during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. He was to be charged with allocating his son, Mr Ian Kipchoge Keino, $24,960 (Sh2.5 million) for air ticket and allowances:during the games.

Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti gave the director of public prosecution (DPP) room to give fresh recommendations on allegations against the four-time Olympic gold medalist. The DPP will also investigate Mr Keino further and verify the charges.

Should he be required to take plea, the magistrate said, he should do so on the first day after the pre-trial which has been set for November16. Mr Keino’s lawyer, Cecil Miller, had said the DP Phad recommended that the plea taking be deferred for seven days.

He also noted that the former chair of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (Nock) has complied with previous court orders and that there were developments when he appeared before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
