Court summons Wario for skipping hearing

A court has ordered Kenya’s ambassador to Austria Hassan Wario to present himself to detectives on Thursday. Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoi issued the summons after Wario and three others failed to appear in court yesterday.

The former sports cabinet secretary is facing six counts of abuse of office for allegedly improperly conferring a benefit of Ksh 1.5 million from 6 players during the 2016 Olympics. He is expected to plead to the charges on Friday. Others charged are former finance officer in the Sports ministry Patrick Kimanthi. former director of administration Harun Komen and former national Olympic committee of Kenya president Kipchoge Keiono.

Wario is accused of using his office to improperly confer Sh 1.5 million to Adan Omar by including him in the Rio 2016 Olympic games delegation team to travel to Brazil, leading to the loss of public funds.

The charge sheets indicated that on March 30th 2016 and august 18th 2016, Wario used his office to improperly confer a benefit of Sh 1,506,391 to James Gitau by including him in the games.

The court heard that the suspects had traveled out of the country for official duties as they had not received their summons from the prosecution. Mr Keino is expected back today according to his lawyer Cecil Miller.
