CS Kamau’s trial to go on, says court

Hearing of a corruption case against suspended Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau will proceed after a magistrate ruled out further delays. The magistrate overruled a request for the suspension of the trial until the outcome of a petition Mr Kamau has lodged alongside his personal assistant. The two are challenging the legality of their prosecution. And yesterday, the magistrate directed that all parties prepare for the start of the trial in seven days, as “there is no active order as yet stopping the progress of the case.

Mr Kamau’s lawyer had asked for an adjournment to await the outcome of the petition at the High Court. The CS is charged with wilful failure to comply with government financial regulations in relation to the design of the Kamukuywa-Kaptama-Kapsokwony-Sirisia road that led to massive embezzlement of funds by a phantom contractor. Lawyer Cecil Miller also made a similar request on behalf of Mr Gilbert Arasa who was the CS’s personal assistant. The lawyer wanted the court to reconvene not later that November 12 when a ruling on the petition would be ready.
