UK foreign office accused of frustrating Mau Mau pay-off

CM

Two companies representing some Mau Mau veterans who were tortured, mistreated and wrongfully detained, have said their efforts to get compensation for the veterans are being frustrated by Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO) in UK.

Tandern Law and Miller Advocates Company, which represents more than 20,000 Mau Mau veterans among them Dedan Kimathis widow, said in a joint conference in Nairobi yesterday that the office has no interest in starting any negotiations to compensate the victims.

The firms lead solicitor Freddie Cosgrove-Gibson said they have been frustrated by the UK office and have been unable to bring the matter of the compensation to satisfactory conclusion on time.

The commonwealth office has shown no interest in starting any negotiations despite settling similar claims under the Leigh day settlement. Nevertheless, we remain committed to work with the court to bring these matters to a speedy and satisfactory conclusion said Cosgrove.
