Reprieve for DCI Boss George Kinoti after Court of Appeal Suspends Sentencing Orders

Kinoti was sentenced to four months in jail for allegedly disobeying court orders over businessman Jimi Wanjigi’s firearm case.

Kinoti filed an appeal through lawyer Cecil Miller who challenged the courts that should the DCI boss be sentenced, no order will acquit him if the appeal is heard letter.

In his petition, Kinoti sought to overturn Justice Anthony Mrima’s decision, sentencing him to a 4-month jail term on grounds that he failed to return firearms to the businessman in November last year. Advocate Miller argued that unless the sentence issued by Justice Anthony Mrima last year is stopped, the direct will suffer irreparable damage to his life and career. Kinoti was on November 18, 2021, sentenced to four months in prison by Justice Mrima after he was found guilty of defying court orders dated June 21, 2019, requiring him to release seven firearms and ammunition to Wanjigi.

In his ruling, Mrima ordered Kinoti to surrender himself to the officer-in-charge of Kamiti Maximum Prison with a view to serving the sentence within seven days. The judge directed that in the event that Kinoti fails to surrender, a warrant of arrest would be issued against him and the Inspector General of Police would execute the same.

If the IG Hillary Mutyambai fails to execute the warrant, the same shall remain valid and be executed at any time, including when Kinoti leaves the office of the DCI. The ruling came moments after Kinoti opined that he was ready to go to jail for serving Kenyans. He said that his job, as tasked by President Uhuru Kenyatta has many changes but he is dedicated to serving Kenyans.
